arkityp, the imprint solely dedicated to archie hamilton and rossko s collaborations, returns in 2018 with its sophomore release - 3 for a tenner ep, landing in all good record stores march 19. born out of marathon sessions in hamilton s london based studios, the duo would road-test the outcomes of these endeavours, letting the dancefloors adjudicate the ep s final tracklist, one that elaborates further on the theme of aktp001 - growing up clubbing in the uk s capital. delving deep into the cross-pollinations between minimal, dub techno and tech house, this three tracker celebrates the attitude and energy within england s club culture, a culture that has profoundly impacted the perspective of both label bosses and their production style.

sascha borchardt (a.k.a monoloc) will start a label, unterland, with a new ep.
the label will serve as a vehicle through which the german producer takes a step away from the club environment by presenting new sonic interpretations, including experimental, minimalist, and atmospheric. material will come from monoloc himself and friends, and the focus will be on “dramatic” sounds with drone and noise influences. think movie soundtracks and film music, albeit with both feet planted in the electronic genre. each release will aim to “tell a story” through 8 to 10 productions.
unterland will launch in end of march 2018 with a collaborative ep by monoloc and beauty of inconsequenz, a unsearchable and unidentified project with no previous recording history. the eight tracks are all based heavily on field recordings, the sound is dark and deeply atmospheric with dubstep influences. while distanced somewhat from the 4/4 format, the tracks are cerebral and hypnotic.
from there on, there will be 3-4 releases per year, each of which will be accompanied by high quality artwork as curated by borchardt, who will work closely with selected photographers and artists to provide imagery that aesthetically compliments the music.

detroit duo ataxia offer up their kodak moment ep via visionquest this march, accompanied by an edit from label co-founders shaun reeves and ryan crosson. eric ricker and ted krisko aka ataxia have been at the forefront of the contemporary house and techno scene for some time, racking up releases on some of the leading labels across the globe such as leftroom, nervous, culprit and play it say it, making the duo one of detroits finest exports in recent years. here we see them making their debut on visionquest, the label of fellow detroit natives ryan crosson, shaun reeves and lee curtiss. vhs leads the package with murky synth swells, resonant synth sweeps and fluttering square wave bass tones at its core as shuffled drums carry the ever-evolving hypnotic groove along. the original mix of kodak moment follows, shifting the focus over to snaking bass lines, mind-bending, modulating synth whirrs and dynamic, choppy percussion throughout. reeves & crossons edit of kodak moment then rounds out the release, stripping things back to ethereal atmospherics and shuffled drums whilst subtly stirring in the original’s hooky bass groove as the interpretation unfolds.

uk hip hop’s original and best live band are back with brand new album ‘bring out the sound’, released in march 2018 on bbe music. founded in the early 90s by ollie teeba and jake wherry, the herbaliser have earned every single accolade they’ve received during almost 25 years of touring and recording. best known for delivering a series of groundbreaking albums on ninja tune and providing one of the all-time highlights of the ‘fabric live’ mix series, the herbaliser’s most recent lp ‘there were seven’ was issued on their own ‘department h’ imprint back in 2012. having worked with hip hop royalty such as jazzy jeff and pete rock over the years, not to mention releasing j dilla’s first and last solo albums, bbe are delighted to share in the herbaliser’s musical journey.

akokan is a yoruba word used in cuba meaning from the heart, and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album (march 30/daptone records) by orquesta akokan feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. assembled and led by cuban vocalist jose pepito gomez, orquesta akokan is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. it features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at havanas hallowed state-run estudios areito. areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important cuban records have been made. the album was produced by jacob plasse and arranged by mike eckroth. comes in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

as part of the ten-year anniversary dekmantel presents the final record in a ten-part-ep series. split into two parts due to its immensity, the final instalment is a re-issue of tony allens asiko (in a silent mix) originally released in 1999 and remixes by motor city drum ensemble and ricardo villalobos. the first part features a grandiose 29-minute ricardo villalobos version of the afrobeat masters cut. a true collaboration of giants.having been a regular at the festival for several years now, villalobos delivers a remix, one of his longest to date, that only he can produce. allowing the percussion to breathe into a monumental rhythm, villalobos warps the vocals, restructuring the bass and drums into a rolling dub-fusion of techno that is characteristic of his remixes to date, yet still breathtaking in its execution. afrobeat-minimalism, with dub-infused fire, and near psychedelic ambience that perfectly synchs the worlds of tony allen, and ricardo villalobos, two legends who’ve helped re-shape the face of music. highlighting the diversity of sounds that have come to represent the dutch label and festival series, the eps to date have encompassed a range of artists and genres, featuring label favourites, as well as whole bunch of debuting artists. the ep series kicked off in march 2018, and over the course of a year featured the likes of gigi masin, lena willikens, burnt friedman, donato dozzy, the egyptian lover, palms trax, and more.

mysterious berlin imprint mask preps its second release with four more untitled tracks this march. continuing the theme of the first release, noah has been produced and recorded live in one take using a selection of analogue gear, including an emu sp 1200, mutual instruments ambika, nord rack 2x, octatrack, vermona action filter 4. a soothing synth line sets the tone of the a1 before implementing sporadic drums and squelchy notes, making way for the melodic chords and a wall of sub bass in the mesmerising a2. murky atmospherics and a medley of percussive hits generate a dusty aesthetic in the b1 until the organic beat and distorted robotic sounds of the b2 provide an otherworldly conclusion to the enigmatic release.

more talking all that jazz, more high aiming music by fumio itabashi: mule musiq is ready to release another record by the legendary japanese jazz pianist, born in ashikaga, tochigi in the year 1949. this time his first solo record ever: the heavy jazzing “nature”, which has never been reissued on vinyl since its birth in 1979. it has been recorded at nippon columbia 1st studio, tokyo from march 13 to 15 in the year of its release.

jonny whites art department returns this march with his first solo ep in nearly 3 years, the first of a string of releases planned for 2018. the record features three inventive new tracks, including one produced in association with new york house pioneer toddy terry and vocalist roland clark. in no uncertain terms, this package re-asserts art department as one of contemporary house musics most essential voices.

the third of march’s trio of py 45s, is a revisit to the always enjoyable dark electro world of berlin’s mighty detox twins.
the new record offers up a pair of killer synthpop gems which, in the words of the bands’ mark vorderhaus “drift into the arena of the unwell with their latest outing “in the hospital garden”, and pose the curious questions: is it so unfortunate to surrender your mind to a permanent altered state? can losing oneself irreversibly to a manipulated insanity, actually prove to become a rare and wonderful freedom? attraction battles control as the transformation completes itself. the b-side, “transformation” depicts the liberated insanity without challenge, now thriving and pulsating beyond the point of any return.”

polytechnic youth enter the fray once again, continuing an already productive year (these new 45s are 4/5/6th releases in 2018 already!) with a trio of quite brilliant yet totally different 45s.
alpár aka hungarian bálint zalkai, is the co-founder of farbwechsel, the budapest based record label, and his own recordings of electronic compositions (often built upon random looping sequencers in a minimalist style) are key to the label’s release output thus far. his goal as he sees it is to “catch a random pattern, loop it and build up a piece with that randomly pulsing theme. just let to flow the voltages and sound waves and try not to disturb them or change their basic behaviours”.
the two tracks here were recorded with this approach very much in mind. the atmosphere of “mejiro” is “not unlike a bird observation. attempting to find the right spot, getting closer and closer to the bird, which almost controls you and your movements as you attempt to near it”. whereas “wakayama” is a more direct piece, and maybe the most melodic song alpár ever recorded. while “mejiro” is a woozy, cautious piece, “wakayama is like a tropical fruit or the ume, (the japanese apricot), colourful and full of flavour yet -with thanks to- the slowly humming theme in the background, an element of sourness grips you at the back of your tongue as it ends!

the second of march’s trio of killer polytechnic youth 45s is a mighty extended piece of slow building berlin school-esque electronica extended over 2 sides of a 33rpm disk, recorded by adam leonard, initially from a batch of 18 tracks recorded at varying times over the last six years.
“entkommen” is his first release for the label here, and both artist and label rather liked the idea of one extended track across two sides of a 45, whereby the listener must flip the disc at a half way point to continue the piece. it struck us as increasingly unusual and works a treat here...
adam has amassed a number of acclaimed releases in varying styles, and across a number of esteemed labels over the years. last year’s full band release “invaderband” being shortlisted for a northern ireland music prize 2017 and was 6music recommended. not to mention previous releases in collaboration with the owl service and p.g six.
his electronic home recordings are all well worth investigating and polytechnic youth proudly releases the first fruits of those sessions right here. a numbered, limited edition vinyl only 7” hand numbered to 250 copies.

demuja joins the madhouse roster this march with come to me, a four track ep featuring french/australian singer ladybird and a folamour remix of the title track. after various releases on the likes of nervous records, rtct records, and his own label muja, austria’s bernhard weiss aka demuja joins madhouse with some fresh material following last year’s output on house puff and freerange. the release opens with title track come to me, a rough and ready lo-fi number featuring a soulful sample, and blissful stabs of horns and strings. following is the folamour’s lost in eden remix, twisting the original into a balearic, sun-drenched vibe, contrasting the original and bringing a more funk-infused, melodious feel to things. up next is the second original on the release take which employs classic house tropes with a nod to the 90s via catchy horns and a new jersey garage/house beat. free me feat ladybird then closes the package, taking you on a silky smooth house journey, with ladybirds dazzling vocals taking center stage.

the score introduces several new themes interwoven throughout the film, including identities for the character rose tico, the interactions between rey and luke skywalker on ahch-to island, and the resistance’s desperate escape from the first order. the score also reprises numerous themes and motifs introduced in the force awakens, including those for the characters of rey, kylo ren, poe dameron, and snoke, as well as the -march of the resistance- and -the jedi steps-. themes introduced in the original trilogy return as well, including -luke’s theme-, -leia’s theme-, -the rebel fanfare-, and the -force theme- from a new hope, -yoda’s theme-, -the imperial march-, and -han solo and the princess- from the empire strikes back, and, -luke and leia- and -the emperor’s theme- from return of the jedi. excerpts of the -tie fighter attack- cue, first heard in a new hope and reprised for return of the jedi, are also included. -the emperor’s theme- is the only returning theme to not be included within the official soundtrack presentation, it occurs in the film when snoke tortures rey for information. the score briefly quotes -aquarela do brasil- by ary barroso in its -canto bight- track as a reference to the 1985 terry gilliam film brazil. it also contains a brief quote of williams’s own theme for the long goodbye (co-composed by johnny mercer) during finn and rose’s escape, although this was not included in the official soundtrack release.

uncage founder marco faraone debuts on rekids, dropping four techno cuts on the label’s special projects series this march. the italian producer has had a busy few years touring north america, south america and europe, not to mention dropping releases on labels like ovum and tenax recordings. meanwhile his uncage imprint, which he runs alongside norman methner, has quickly cemented a reputation for quality house and techno, releasing music from artists like eduardo de la calle, pablo mateo and fabio della torre (under his corcos moniker). with its rolling percussion and a heady spoken word sample, find the song introduces a quintessential rekids record. thunderous kick drums and piercing stabs then form the high-octane arcane before the dark and ominous justice demonstrates industrial elements and floating atmospherics. tying it all together, tantalizing melodies join echoing effects for the final track titled layers.

d.ko records regular mad rey joins rekids with a pair of deep house cuts this march. the parisian producer and red lebanese co-founder started releasing music as mad rey in 2014, providing d.ko records with their second release (having already contributed to the d.ko01 various artists ep under his real name quentin leroy). he now joins rekids with a solid two track package initiating with in my house no6, a lively slice of house featuring funky bass licks and jazz influenced melodies complete with a compelling groove. on the flip, lorage (dub) lorage (dub) slows down the tempo whilst exhibiting sampled strings, crunchy snares and twinkling effects.

norwegian duo smerz had a prolific 2017, which saw the copenhagen-based henriette and catharina play the likes of club 2 club, moma ps1, sell out half life parties of their own, as well as release five new tracks along with five self-directed videos. clearly not ones to wait around, smerz go in to the new year with their have fun ep on the horizon for release via xl recordings in march 2018. with their unique electronic sound blending deconstructed club music, minimalist r&b and experimental pop and techno, smerz are also prolific djs who s djing style takes a similar route. mixing live vocals over their own music and interlaced with choice cuts aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this duo dj hard in a live setting and are thrilling to watch as well as listen. smerz currently host their own monthly nts radio residency, mixing cutting-edge dance music and darker tones, in what is turning in to their trademark style.

indianapolis band led by organist bobby watley (ex-lonnie smith group) and driven by his funky jack mcduff-influenced playing. discovered in march 1971, funk inc had sent bob porter a demo tape which languished in a pile of other until the producer finally got around to working his way through the whole batch. the band s tape grabbed him as soon as he heard the first notes and the rest, as they say, is history. a quintet, funk inc s constituent members were leader bobby watley on organ, eugene barr on tenor saxophone, steve weakley on guitar, jimmy munford on drums and cecil hunt on congas. watley, the leader, worked originally as a drummer, with both winston walls and lonnie smith. he switched to organ in 1969 and was heavily influenced by jack mcduff. barr played his first professional gig with little milton and then went on to lead his own band prior to joining funk inc. munford worked with artists of the calibre of etta james, jerry butler and james brown. hunt had been with the coasters as well as playing with local california bands. weakley was one of the (then) new breed of guitarists whose debt owed as much to jimi hendrix as kenny burrell.

experimental cinema sonics, electroacoustic research practice and shadowy wind instruments come together to form this unique interpretation of the mythical city of gold. utilising rare, half forgotten soviet era synthesisers vladimir karpov creates immersive soundscapes under the name xyr. the formanta mini keytar and the alisa 1377 lend karpovs music strange, seldom heard atmospheres which the st. petersburg native then combines with field recordings, toy percussion and wood flute to further build upon his utopian narratives. part concept album, part nod to popol vuh, his attempt to channel the thematics of the ancient tale of the muisca people through his modest home studio left a lasting impression on us here at 12th isle and were proud to present a selection of the tracks on vinyl for the very first time. originally confined to just 25 cassette tapes, for this edition we have assembled some of the most inspiring tracks from the sessions as well as the bonus closing piece aguirre song. immediately engaging, sincerely heartfelt and strikingly original, these are recordings we have returned to time and time again. limited edition lp comes housed in screenprinted sleeve. el dorado recorded april-august 2014, originally released via illuminated paths (march 2015).
